Staying Zealous for Life Despite Attends

attendsMy gramma always says, “Gettin’ old ain’t for sissies.” She’s right about that. She’s just had her gall bladder removed. No more cheeseburgers for her.

She already suffers from incontinence.  It’s mostly at night though; she can control her bladder and bowels while she’s awake but while sleeping she wears Attends.

She used to complain about her overactive bladder, which would wake her sometimes three or more times nightly. So she stopped drinking fluids after three o’clock in the afternoon, which helped, but soon she became unable to control herself.

During sleep the body produces a hormone that lessens urine output. The body produces more ADH, or anti-diuretic hormone, when sleeping, but granny’s body doesn’t. She gets down about it sometimes and I tell her not to feel so bad, reassuring her on walks around the block. I point out the birds and the trees and she remembers that she is alive.

Limited activity is a result of incontinence, but luckily granny has me to back her up. Coupled with Attends adult diapers and my support, granny doesn’t have to worry or feel bad about herself. She’s actually proud she’s able to deal with all of her health problems while remaining upbeat and zealous for life.
